There are some beings whose presence stays long after they’re gone.
Rafiki was one of them. Or at least i would like him to be.
My spirit was crushed when I found out Rafiki was poached.
A 25-year-old silverback, a leader, a protector - he was known for his calm nature and deep trust, he led his family through the dense, living world of Bwindi., establishing a relationship and a connection with humans. One that would ultimately lead to his end.
This piece was created to honour that spirit. The spirit of him, the focus on him.
Layered through digital textures of forest, smoke, and fractured light, his image emerges not as something broken- but as something soft and pure and laced with hope.
The way he looks out from the shadows holds something powerful. Not fear. Not anger. Not even my sadness. It is love.
An emotional intelligence that reflects the natural world he came from - a world that still holds him.
This artwork is not about what was taken.
It’s about what remains.
The imprint of a life that mattered.
